Duda sobre una función

Hola amigos,  necesito saber que significa los guiones dentro de esta función. La misma es para sumar unos valores de una columna siempre y cuando las fechas de otra columna sean jueves.  Tengo ésta solución pero no logro entender los guiones.   

SUMAPRODUCTO(B2:B16;--(DIASEM(A2:A16)=4))

El doble guion "--" sirve para cambiar VERDADERO y FALSO en 1 y 0, respectivamente.
